Haiti is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland with a population of 8.3 million. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with a per capita income of $250. More than 2/3 of the population is unemployed and 80% of the population lives in poverty. 3 of 4 Haitians have no running water.
